Well, it didn't take long for the rest of the world to find out where we've been hiding ahead of my fight with Wladimir Klitschko! It's been another busy few days in the 5th Street Gym this week, and we've had a number of special visitors and interested spectators come along and check out the scenery.
Last week I told you all that George Groves would be checking in and sparring Andre Dirrell, and both guys have been getting on like a house on fire – in and out of the ring. Their sparring sessions are bringing everybody to a standstill in the gym and whenever those two step inside the ring it becomes a must-see event. Andre is starting to get his groove back and George is more than holding his own. They are sparring some really ferocious rounds at the moment and it's great to see.
It didn't take long for word to get around, and it didn't take much persuading to get British tennis star Andy Murray down to the 5th Street Gym to watch George and Andre go at it. Andy is a massive boxing fan and knows all there is to know about domestic and world boxing. He says he prefers reading boxing magazines to tennis magazines and is known to watch videos of Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao before stepping on court. How's that for dedication!
Andy dropped into the gym this week to watch us all go through our paces, and he was particularly keen to see George and Andre spar, as I'd told him so much about it. From what I can remember, George and Andre sparred five rounds that day and Andy was blown away by what he saw. He said the passion and intensity on display really humbled him and that it was a pleasure to witness what he had seen. I think, in another life, Andy would have loved to have given boxing a go himself!
Next through the revolving door on Washington Avenue was famous American comedian Dave Chappelle, who stopped by for a light workout with his family. Dave is one of my favourite comedians and 'Chapelle's Show' has kept me entertained throughout many long training camps over the years. I think I now know most of the sketches off by heart! He's in terrific shape at the moment and, like Andy, is a big fan of boxing. He's been known to drop into the 5th Street Gym on a fairly regular basis to hit the bags and pads.
I'm now waiting with baited breath to see who the next star to walk through the doors will be. The accessibility of the 5th Street Gym is one of the great things about the place, and so it doesn't surprise me that so many familiar faces find their way here. The gym is extremely visible along Washington Avenue, is open to everybody that fancies a look and all the guys that work here are extremely accommodating. The attitude of the place is definitely old-school, and I think that's a great way for a boxing gym to be.
In the meantime, I'll keep an ear to the ground and let you know if any other stars greet us with their presence...
Peace,
David Haye
